May 2010 marks the 13th Anniversary of the Greenwich Arts Council’s major program of the year, “Art to the Avenue.” Each year this event has grown in number of artists, participating businesses, and visitors who have enjoyed celebrating art in downtown Greenwich, Connecticut.

Tendencies in Spanish Language Literature

On April 30th, I attended the "Tendencies in Spanish Language Literature" event hosted and cosponsored by the Instituto Cervantes in New York City. The event was one of many during the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature. Here is a set of photos of the event on Flickr.

Descendants of a rich literary tradition, four contemporary writers—Bernardo Atxaga from Basque Country, Javier Calvo from Spain, Santiago Roncagliolo of Peru, and Spain’s Enrique Vila-Mata—discussed new trends in Spanish language fiction with publisher Barbara Epler.

After the discussion, I had the opportunity to meet Bernardo Atxaga. Bernardo Atxaga is the pseudonym for Joseba Irazu Garmendia. He is a writer of novels, short stories, poetry, essays, and children’s books. He began publishing in his native language of Euskara in the 1970s. Atxaga's Obabakoak, which was awarded the Spanish National Literature Prize in 1989, has been translated into 25 languages. His most recent novel, The Accordionist’s Son has received the Grinzane Cavour Prize and the Mondello Prize.
